BJJ Spats FAQs

What are BJJ spats?

BJJ spats are compression tights worn for No-Gi jiu jitsu, grappling, and MMA. They protect your skin from mat burn, ringworm, and scrapes while wicking sweat and allowing full range of motion. Most grapplers wear them under shorts or on their own.

Do you wear anything under BJJ spats?

Yes, wear compression underwear or a fitted base layer under spats. Many grapplers also wear grappling shorts over spats, which is standard at most gyms and required at some competitions. Up top, pair them with a BJJ rash guard to complete the kit.

What is the difference between BJJ spats and regular leggings?

BJJ spats use tougher, higher-denier fabric with reinforced stitching, antimicrobial treatment, and sublimated prints that will not crack or peel under friction. Regular gym leggings tear, hold bacteria, and wear out quickly on the mats. You can also order custom BJJ spats printed with your own design.

Can I wear spats alone for No-Gi?

Yes. Spats alone are accepted at most gyms for No-Gi training. If your gym or a competition ruleset requires shorts, wear grappling shorts over them, or go with spats shorts that build the layer in.

How should BJJ spats fit?

Like a second skin: snug through the waist, thigh, and calf with no bunching behind the knee. If between sizes, size down for compression or up for comfort. Check the size chart on each product page.

How do I wash BJJ spats?

Wash cold after every session, hang dry, skip fabric softener and bleach. This preserves the antimicrobial treatment and the print.
